How to Check If Your Kitchen Tools Are Food-Safe

How to Check If Your Kitchen Tools Are Food-Safe (No PhD in Chemistry Required)

Let’s be honest. You’ve probably sniffed a new silicone spatula and thought, “Why does this smell like a pool float?”

Spoiler: It shouldn’t.

At GreenLeaf Kitchens, we keep things simple. Our tools are made from BPA-free silicone, glass, stainless steel, wood, and cellulose—no mystery materials, no chemistry degree required.

But what about that old plastic spoon from 2019? Or the “bamboo” cutting board that’s actually glued sawdust?

Let’s fix your kitchen drawer.

1. BPA-Free: The Headline, Not the Whole Story

You see "BPA-free" everywhere. Good! But here's the update: BPA-free sometimes means they swapped it for BPF or BPS—same family, similar concerns.

What we use instead:
All our materials are BPA, BPF, and BPS-free. We mostly skip plastic. Our reusable bags and storage containers are 100% food-grade silicone or glass.

The sniff test:
If a "BPA-free" container smells like a new car or a tire shop, send it back. Your lasagna deserves better.

Your leftovers don't need a side of mystery chemicals. That's what hot sauce is for.

2. Food-Grade Silicone: The Un-Spaghetti Hero

You'll see silicone everywhere in our shop—reusable snack bags, utensil sets, storage bags. But not all silicone is equal.

What we use:
100% food-grade silicone that's dishwasher safe, microwave safe, oven safe, and freezer safe. No fillers. No chalky residue.

The pinch test (do this at home):
Twist your silicone spatula. See white marks or a chalky crease? That's filler. Toss it. Real silicone bends cleanly.

The boil test:
Drop a silicone bag or utensil in boiling water for 5 minutes. If the water tastes like plastic or the silicone smells like a factory, it's not pure.

Cheap silicone is like a fake handbag—looks fine from afar, but the safety falls apart fast.

3. Stainless Steel: 18/8, 18/10, and What Matters

18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel is the good stuff. It's food-safe, rust-resistant, and non-reactive. Perfect for tomato sauce, soups, and lazy one-pan pastas.

Cheap stainless (often unmarked) can rust, warp, or leach.

The magnet test:
Grab a fridge magnet. If it sticks hard to your "stainless" pan, it's lower quality. Weak stick or no stick? That's high-grade 18/8 or 18/10.

That $5 "stainless" ladle from the discount store? It's a metal spoon with delusions of grandeur.

4. Glass, Wood & Cellulose: The Classics That Just Work

Glass (like mason jars and large storage containers):
Perfect, as long as the lid is safe. Look for metal or wood lids that are leakproof and BPA-free. Avoid old plastic lids with cloudy, cracked seals.

Wood (like cooking chopsticks or rustic lids):
Great, but hand-wash only. Cracks hide bacteria. If it smells like a wet log, it's time to replace.

Cellulose sponges (like those fun cut-out shapes):
Natural, non-scratch, and compostable. Just microwave them damp for 30 seconds to kill germs. (Don't microwave dry. You'll start a fire and ruin your day.)

Your grandma's wooden spoon is probably fine. Her sponge from 1987? That's a science experiment.

5. One Quick Safety Check for Your Existing Drawers

Before you toss everything, do this 2-minute drill:

Smell test – Any plastic or chemical odor? Out it goes.

Scratch test – Run a fingernail across non-stick or silicone. Leaves a mark? Trash it.

Magnet test – On stainless steel. Sticks hard? Lower quality.

That's it. No lab coat required.

Why GreenLeaf Kitchens Keeps It Simple (and Safe)

We don't sell mystery blends or "proprietary" nonsense. Every product in our store is clearly:

  • BPA / BPF / BPS-free
  • Food-grade silicone, glass, or high-grade stainless steel (18/8 or 18/10)
  • Dishwasher safe, oven safe, or microwave safe (check the label—we tell you exactly)

We've tested the boiling water. We've done the pinch test. We've magnet-checked every pan.

You just have to cook.

P.S. Your spatula shouldn't smell like a pool float. If it does, we have better ones. No judgment. Just better silicone.
